At Wallace Fields Junior School, we recognise that some children help to care for a family member at home. We are keen to identify and support these pupils, known as Young Carers, to ensure they receive the understanding and opportunities they may need in school.
A Young Carer is a child who helps look after a family member who may have:
- A physical disability or long-term health condition
- A mental health difficulty
- Additional needs or a disability
- A substance misuse issue
- An illness that requires ongoing support
The care a child provides may include helping with practical tasks, translating, providing emotional support, supervising siblings, or assisting with day-to-day routines.
We understand that many children who help at home do not always recognise themselves as Young Carers. If you feel your child may have caring responsibilities for a family member, please let your child's class teacher know.
By identifying Young Carers, we can ensure they receive appropriate support within school. This includes:
- Recognition as a Young Carer within our school community
- Opportunities to speak with a trusted member of staff about their wellbeing
- Access to termly local trips and events with other Young Carers
- Additional support and opportunities designed to promote their wellbeing and help them thrive in school
Any information shared with us will be treated sensitively and used to help us provide the best possible support for your child.
If you believe your child is a Young Carer, please contact their class teacher via the school office.
