Year 5 were thrilled to welcome the team from the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) for an unforgettable liquid nitrogen workshop. The session was packed with exciting demonstrations which the children (and the adults!) were all amazed by!

Pupils explored how substances can change states of matter and observed how liquid nitrogen affects different materials. Highlights included watching a tennis ball change in texture and bounciness, as well as seeing a balloon deflate and then re-inflate. The children were fully engaged throughout, asking thoughtful questions and making connections to their learning throughout Year 5.

They then took on the role of scientists themselves, carrying out an investigation where they formed a hypothesis, identified variables, and collaborated to generate a shared set of results.

A huge thank you to Louise and the NPL team for their inspiring delivery and support during the workshop - Year 5 absolutely loved the experience. We are also extremely grateful to Dr John Burns (school governor, parent and NPL employee) for helping to arrange and deliver this fantastic opportunity.
